Charlotte's Best Kept Secrets*
I have been lucky enough to eat around town some lately and I have found some cool new places and revisited some older ones. The best one I can recommend is the Open Kitchen on Morehead. If you are from here and forgot about this place (yes! it's still open) or if you're new and have never heard of it, you have to go there. Its so old school and the food is delish!
Another neat and yummy place I was introduced to is Krazy Fish on Central Ave. They have a good amount of outdoor seating if you're like me and don't like to smell fishy things. They offer a expansive menu and it's a very laid-back, causal atmosphere.
Food Trucks in South End is a great Friday night adventure. It's right there on Camden beside the new Common Market (another fav). You bring a blanket or folding chairs, a few bucks and if you like to drink beer/wine, you can purchase it at CM and drink it at the trucks. I wouldn't go if the weather is rainy, but otherwise, its great for families or just hanging with friends, kid and pet-friendly and there is always a variety to choose from.
I didn't realize until recently, that the movie theater at the Arboretum had been changed into something called "Cinnebarre". For those of you who remember the Silver Screen Café, it's the same concept, reasonably priced, but a little fancier (and non-smoking). But you can sit at the bar and have cocktails before the movie (or during, if you aren't interested in what everyone else is seeing) or you can order straight from the menu and be waited on inside the theater. Oh, and their "buttered popcorn" - wow!
Dish - is one of my new favorite places to eat. You must try the Collard Green Dip, Smokey Lima's, and the Mac and Cheese! Located off Thomas Street, it's a must try! Yum, yum, yum!
If you haven't done so before, please treat yourself to the roof top patio at Whiskey Warehouse in Plaza Midwood. They have a great Bloody Mary bar Saturday and Sunday, a nice wine and beer selection (but you have to go downstairs for a more extensive selection) and they have the BEST Sweet Potato Fries in Charlotte. If you get any burger, vegetarian or carnivorous, you must add their Pimento Cheese!
If you are looking for a decently priced, take out only meal, and happen to be over by Monroe Road and Wendover, you must get something from Oakhurst Grille! I get the "veggie plate" and my favorites are the Collard Greens, Macaroni Salad and side salad, but I hear from all the meat-eaters that they have the best hot dogs in town. Most meals are enough for two people and in the $5 price-range. there sweet tea is super awesome as well.
Last, but not least, my new favorite Chinese take-out is Ho Ho Cherry House on the corner of 7th Street and Pecan. I can only say that their vegetable lo mein is fantastic and they are very accommodating to vegetarians, but everyone who has shared a meal with me there (and you can dine in or out), has been extremely satisfied.
I like giving props to some of my favorite places, so I know it's been awhile, but there ya have it! Bon appetit!
